Günter Verheugen is a veteran of Foreign Affairs, EU and German domestic politics. Since 1977 he took over important functions in the German liberal party (FDP) and became the General Secretary. In 1982, he joined the social democrats (SPD) and was elected as Member of the Federal Parliament. He served the SPD in different posts including that of General Secretary. He entered the Foreign Office as State Minister in 1998. Being appointed as a Commissioner for Enlargement in 1999 he oversaw the EU’s largest accession to date on 1 May 2004. In the current European Commission he has been appointed Vice President and the responsible Commissioner for Industry and Enterprise.
