| The History of AIESEC in Tanzania started by the
introduction of the organization in Tanzania by Prof.
Letice Rutashobya (A Professor at the University of Dar
Es Salaam) after her visit in Sweden, France and
Germany in her duties as a professor of the University
of Dar Es Salaam. During her visit, professor
Rutashobya got a chance to witness AIESEC members
showing the skills, intelligence and enthusiasm,
something that she fell in love with and wanted to
establish AIESEC in Tanzania.
Professor Rutashobya after her trips, she gathered
three students from the Faculty of Commerce and told
them about AIESEC. She then sponsored these
students to travel to Kenya to attend the AIESEC in
Kenya national Conference. These students were
Ephraim Mafuru, Gerald Kamugisha and Rodgers Lamlembe.
All
students returned from the conference, they delivered a
report that explains AIESEC activities and feasibility of
having AIESEC in Tanzania. After this report, it was
agreed that AIESEC in Tanzania was possible and
soon 20 first members were recruited. The first activity
done was to register the Organization in the Ministry of
home Affairs in the year 1999, the registration was
followed by educational seminars and workshops about
AIESEC activities and exchange program education to
the membership. In 2002, the organization was
launched officially by the Minister of Higher Learning
Institutions Mr. Ng’wandu, where by the University of
Dar Es salaam Administration heavily supported
AIESEC members to travel to different regional
conferences of AIESEC happening in the African
region.
In 2001/2002, AIESEC in Tanzania suffered a great
seatback and almost closed down as a lot of operations
and activities became stagnant and nearly dead, this
was because of the continuity issues as the whole
leadership and experience AIESECers finished
university and left in the membership very new
members.
In 2002/2003, AIESEC in Tanzania revamped itself
under the leadership of Local Committee President Mr.
Merciory Ngido who ignited the AIESEC spirit among
the members in Tanzania. The year got a lot of good
AIESECers who had AIESEC life span of 2 to 3 years.
The year 2003/2004 AIESEC Kenya sent a special
envoy to AIESEC members of Tanzania, in
management traineeships (MT TNs) one at PWC and
the other one to Deloitte. In the same year 2003,
AIESEC in Tanzania began its mission to gain official
extension status. A mission that saw through
developing of system in the organization, increasing the
number of members up to 40 members, implementation
of core work, planning for the Organization and gaining
a good external positioning in the University Community
and Tanzania as a whole. This term 2003/2004 was
the beginning of strengthening of AIESEC in the
community.
The term 2004/2005 started with strengthening external
relation and exchange by approaching more companies
in the community and promoting exchange to students
and Companies as one of the main products of
AIESEC.
In 2004, (at the International Presidents Meeting, IPM in
Romania) AIESEC in TANZANIA gained an official
extension status and Kenya became the Partner
Country in this endeavor to join the global AIESEC
Network.
In 2005/2006 AIESEC in Tanzania formed its first
Member committee Team, the MC Team that operates
under the same Local Chapter (LC) Office of the
University of Dar Es Salaam. Also during that term,
AIESEC in Tanzania grew tremendously from the
membership of 40 to 70 members, strong people
development system were built to ensure members
pass through the AIESEC experience.
At 07:26am on the 27th February in 2007, AIESEC in
Tanzania was granted its full membership status at the
International Presidents Meeting (IPM) 2007 in Egypt.
This was a turning point for AIESEC in Tanzania and a
proper birth of a strong AIESEC Country in the AIESEC
global network.
The term 2006/2007 also opened the door for the
Alumni who started re-connecting to AIESEC and going
back to AIESEC. In this term, more than 20 exchanges
were realized.
In the term 2007/2008 AIESEC in Tanzania still had a
great focus in Exchange, people and Talent
Management as well as Expansion. Referring to this,
AIESEC in Tanzania has been able to introduce
AIESEC at St. Augustine University in Mwanza as the
New Local Chapter, where by two representative
students got an opportunity to attend the East African
Development Seminar held in Bagamoyo at Palm Tree
Village Resort. These representatives were able to
learn more about AIESEC spirit and activities which
gave them confidence and direction for Leading
AIESEC expansion initiatives at their University.
Also in this term, AIESEC in Tanzania has been able to
maintain clear external positioning of AIESEC in
Tanzania both in the University Community and
Tanzanian community at large extent through the use of
media and special events. |
